What is the nutr?
If you are a little bit more active on Instagram and the vegan community you may have seen this new product already. First of all, what is the Nutr it is a single-serve nut milk maker but it can make almond, hazelnut, oat, hemp seed, and more. There are plenty of options! Watch my unboxing video to see what the package contains when you order it.
What can it do?
There are three functional buttons on the machine, so you have a no heat button which is done in two minutes. You have the warm button which will lightly warm your milk and takes around five minutes. And then you also have the hot button which takes 20 minutes, really cooks your milk through and is needed if you want to make soy or rice milk. since those need to be cooked and heated to be consumed safely
Single-Serve
It's a single-serve machine, which means you get around a cup to one and a half cups of plant milk when using. It makes the machine small and compact, perfect for apartments and small living spaces. Additionally, it 'forces' me to make fresh milk each time.
It's sustainable
Nutr is a sustainably focused brand. They worked hard to make this product as sustainable as possible. With every purchase, they plant a tree, and the interior is stainless steel while the outside is made out of recycled plastic. I think we need more brands working like that!
By making plant milk at home you are reducing your emissions and waste. It is no secret that plant milk is gentler on the planet than the dairy industry. However, by buying nuts, seeds, or grains in bulk (best from a zero waste shop) you are taking it to the next level.
Easy and mess-free
This product in my opinion makes homemade nut milk super easy. You don't have to like to use those cheesecloths and strain them by hand. It comes with a little strainer that makes it so quick and easy.
Both the strainer and the machine are easy and quick to clean. Watch this video to see how it cleans. A little downside is that I could see the strainer wear out quickly with frequent use. And at this time Nutr is not selling the strainer apart from the machine. However, a regular fine sieve will strain the milk just as well.
Save money long-term
The Nutr machine comes with a cost price of $169 (and goes up to $400 if buying in a bundle with mug and jar sets). However, I think by using it regularly you will end up saving long term since it is way cheaper to make plant milk at home. For example, homemade Oat milk ranges between $0.07 to 0.25 per cup. While store-bought oat milk ranges from $1.00 to 2.00 per cup.
You have full control over what gets into your plant milk
There are usually added oils, salt, and preservatives in store-bought plant milk. Sometimes even added sugar! Especially when it comes to nut milk often there's not a lot of nuts actually in it. If you want to sweeten it, simply add a bit of your favorite sweeteners such as maple syrup, agave, coconut sugar, or even softened dates.
Cons and conclusion
The Nutr is a single-serve machine, so if you are looking for a machine that makes big batches of plant milk this is not the right product for you.
I personally am using it every morning and enjoy it very much! It makes the process of making your own plant milk at home super easy and fun! Check this recipe for toasted hazelnut iced coffee out where I am using almond milk from the Nutr.
Overall you could say the Nutr machine is a small food processor, with a couple of additional settings specifically made to serve you with plant-based milk. If you need a machine like this for making plant milk at home is a very personal perception.
