🤔 What is Earth Breeze?
Earth Breeze is a plastic-free Dishwasher and Laundry Detergent brand that is non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty-free, as well as safe for sensitive skin including babies. They also offer green household products, such as their Hope Cloths (paper towel replacement), in addition to their detergents. You can buy all their products once, or set up a regular delivery (every month, every second third, or fourth month).
🧼 Is Earth Breeze Dishwasher Detergent good?
Their dishwasher detergent comes in two varieties: Fragrance-Free and Lemon Citrus smell (read the specific ingredients here). The brand advertises its fight against plastic pollution, and so as advertised all products come in cardboard packaging (even the box it is shipped in).
Their Powder Pebble formula has an enzyme added to provide a powerful clean with an all-in-one formula. This includes a soft water function, a washing function, and a brightening function. I tried and used their pebbles many times and can only say that they clean very well!
Their 2-pack starts at 28$ for a one-time purchase, leaving you with 60 tablets. That means at this price a load of dishwashing costs you around 0.46$.
🧐 What about the PVA film?
The tablets are coated in a water-soluble PVA film, which will completely dissolve. This is used to maintain the integrity of the Power Pebbles and ensures that they will store and transport well through the shipping process and only dissolve when they come in contact with water. I personally had to look up what PVA actually is and to be honest, the opinions on it are quite controversial.
It is not plastic, but it also kinda is, and we still don’t know enough about it. Ultimately, very little is known about how PVA behaves as a pollutant but one thing remains clear, it does not fully biodegrade, or it can take decades depending on what kind of PVA is used.
It is used by many detergent companies, including most eco-friendly ones like Earth Breeze. Earth Breeze states that their PVA is safe for the environment. However, due to its controversy, I hope they may find an alternative to this on their product or create an additional PVA-free product for anyone who really does not want to use PVA.
🌱 Earth Breeze's statement on PVA
I reached out to them and asked about their PVA via email. Here is their statement: "We are aware of the controversy surrounding PVA's. Please know that there are MANY TYPES of these. The ones we use are safe, water-soluble PVA film, which will dissolve with no residue. With so many contrasting perceptions about it, we stand with our own research team that PVA does not meet any of the definitions of micro-plastic. It is highly water-soluble and is biodegradable. Other brands maybe are using the toxic kind of PVA's. Us we don't."
♻️ Paper Towel Alternative - Hope Cloths
Their Hope Cloths are designed to replace paper towels in your home.
And I have to say that they are really nice to use! They are great to use as a counter wipe and dishcloth. To clean them you can add them to your dishwasher. According to Earth Breeze, the hope cloths are fully biodegradable and will compose in approx. 12 weeks (read here to see what they are made out of).
Earth Breeze offers the idea of repurposing its Hope Cloths after their long-term usage to start seeds, hydrate thirsty plants, use them to remove pet hair from furniture, and more.
🤔 Are Earth Breeze's Hope Cloths any good?
Overall they are a fabulous product. They soak and clean well. However, they will not replace paper towels entirely in my household. That being said my usage of paper towels has decreased significantly since I started using Hope Cloths. They are super handy and definitely a more eco-friendly choice than paper towels!
🤓 Conclusion
Overall I think Earth Breeze is a fantastic brand, which does not only work to create a better world by selling more eco-friendly products but also does A LOT of charity work. I truly believe we need more brands to work like Earth Breeze!

Thanks for your candid review of earth Breeze. I am always looking for eco-friendly alternatives to wasteful products. With chemical allergies, I have to be especially careful when trying new products unless I just want hives for days. I might give these a try.

The NY Times has an article on the plastic coating. it is not enough that it dissolves. it's still a micro plastic. i love their sheets but until they give us more evidence on the coating of the peebles, I will not buy more

Hi Chuck, Thank you for bringing up a crucial point and expressing your concerns about the plastic coating on Earth Breeze products. It's essential to be mindful of the environmental impact of every aspect of the products we use. I appreciate your awareness of the microplastic issue, and it's completely understandable that you want more information on the coating of the sheets. Generally we need more research on plastics in all our daily products. For example: They recently found out that there is more micro plastic in our bottled waters than we ever expected to be, yet no one knows if or how harmful this is for the human body. The issue of microplastics is indeed a significant one, and it's commendable that you're seeking more information.
It's also very understandable that you're hesitant to purchase until there's more evidence about the coating of the pebbles. Transparency and accountability are crucial in addressing these concerns. In the meantime, exploring alternatives or continuing to use products you trust is a valid choice. It's through informed consumer decisions and constructive dialogue that we can push for greater sustainability in the products we use. Thank you for bringing attention to this important issue. And please feel free to share any other product recommendations that you have found as alternative!
