Is Puff Pastry vegan? Traditionally it contains dairy butter, and sometimes eggs. However, most puff pastry and shortcrust pastry, available in stores are made without animal products for longer shelf life. Therefore they are sometimes suitable for vegans. Avoid those that say all butter and always check the ingredient list before purchasing.
To make things easier for you, read this guide on vegan puff pastry. Below you find more tips and a list of vegan puff pastry brands (in the United States).

Hidden animal products to look out for
Despite obvious animal products, such as dairy or eggs, hidden animal products in store-bought puff pastry could be mono and diglycerides! These can be animal-derived if not specified that it comes from a plant source.

Alternatives and substitutions
Sometimes opting out for a similar dough product is the way to go. One of the most similar products to puff pastry in texture are croissant, crescent, and phyllo dough. (If you want to make my vegan German cinnamon rolls with a store-bought variety, I highly recommend one of these varieties.)
Croissant and Crescent rolls: Some brands that are vegan include Pillsbury and Trader Joe's. If you want to make sure even the sugar used in the product is vegan buy organic brands, such as Annie's (read here why sugar is not always vegan). Even though Annie's does not carry a puff pastry at this time their Organic Crescent Rolls and Organic Flaky Biscuits are fantastic alternatives! .
Phyllo Dough: Even though they are not exactly the same (puff pastry is thicker and richer than phyllo dough), it can be a great alternative to regular puff pastry. Athens Food's Phyllo Dough is vegan for example.
Homemade puff pastry
Last but not least, you can always make vegan puff pastry from scratch at home. All you need to make it yourself is all-purpose flour, full-fat coconut milk, active dry yeast, vegan cane sugar, a pinch of salt, flax meal, and vegan butter (use sticks, do not use a spread).
