Are Graham Crackers vegan? The short answer is yes and no. Most Graham crackers are not vegan friendly. Unfortunately the typical Graham cracker has added honey. An animal product made by bees which most vegans don't consume. In addition store bought Graham Crackers may have other added or hidden animal products. For example milk, milk powder, eggs or confectioner’s glaze (also known as shellac or lac resin). I recommend always checking the ingredient list, before purchasing.
However there is still brands out there that don't use animal products in their Graham crackers! Graham cracker substitutions
If you are living outside US the mentioned brands will probably not bring you any further. However, there are some things to keep in mind when looking for vegan Graham crackers or substitutions in your country. Obviously I can't list all the alternatives or similar products for every country. In spite of that if you can't find any vegan Graham Crackers look for Digestive Biscuits!
Digestive biscuits are in fact very similar to graham crackers. Usually they are vegan. Nonetheless check the ingredient list before purchasing any new products always. Digestive Biscuits may be not as sweet, a little thicker and less crisp than Graham crackers. However they can be used in many of the same ways as the Grahams! For the most part these biscuits are very popular in the UK. But despite that digestives are available in many other countries around the world too. Thus look out for digestives!
German Butter Biscuits - Butterkekse are in fact very similar in flavor, texture, and thickness to Graham crackers. In conclusion, if you can find vegan German butter cookies where you live, you've found an excellent substitute.
Making them from scratch
Last but not least, if you still can't find any vegan Graham crackers near you I highly recommend starting making your own! They are actually not too complicated to bake from scratch.
There are many ways to use Graham crackers. Try them as a crust in this delicious vegan s'mores pie, or use them as a decoration on top of a sheet cake.
